The Town of Waterton

A small mountain town with kitsch, art, decent eats, an excellent cafe (alas, no bookstore) and super sights.

We finally bought some bear spray at the outdoor shop. $35 buys 8 seconds of defense, IF you are within spraying distance. We don't know why we didn't buy two bottles. For me, the one with bear angst, it probably has something to do with my near giddiness (to the detriment of my other sensibilities) over finally bearing a bear weapon. I don't want to be a meal.

Speaking of meal, Zum's is probably the best place to eat in town.

Town is a relatively safe haven for mule deer who also don't want to be meals.

I could have literally reached out and touched this little one, but then, I suppose, Mama would have shred me into strips with her hooves:

A stone beach edges one side of town. The Prince of Wales Hotel looms in the background.

The other direction:

Flowers must be like candy to fawns. They can't resist them, hence the chicken wire casing every reachable plant and the flower pots hovering overhead.

If you need a wind down or a rev up, or an internet connection, Pearl's Cafe is just the place. It's also the place to hold a conversation with a magpie, if you feel so inclined.

Nova Scotians, you think you have a deer problem? Broad daylight. Six feet away. Property owners concede.

Prince of Wales Hotel up close.
